The Americano cocktail is a fizzy, bittersweet drink with Italian origins. It’s the perfect aperitivo before dinner or a refreshing weekend afternoon sipper. The Americano is a unique spritz that strikes the elusive balance between bitter and sweet. This cold, bubbly drink is lovely on a hot day, yet the complex, warming flavors are equally welcome before Thanksgiving supper.

Americano cocktails are made with Campari, sweet vermouth and club soda. If you love a Negroni, this drink is right up your alley. The Americano is served in a taller glass with club soda instead of gin, and the Negroni is actually a derivative of the Americano. Don’t write off this cocktail if you don’t like Negronis, though (I don’t!). It’s like a Negroni light, and you can adjust it to suit your preferences.

Americano cocktails have nothing in common with Americano coffee, except that they were both popularized by Americans visiting Italy. Apparently, the Americano is based on another drink, the Milano-Torino, which is made with just Campari and Vermouth di Torino. There are several origin stories, and I’m not sure which one is true. All I know is that this is a nice cocktail! I hope you enjoy it.

These cocktails require four basic ingredients plus ice. 

1) Campari

Campari is a vibrant red amaro. The brand describes the flavors as “Pleasantly bitter with a velvety aftertaste. Intense notes of orange, herbs and wood.” Look for Campari near the liqueurs or other amaros at the liquor store.

2) Sweet vermouth, like Dolin

Sweet vermouth is dark red or brown, not clear. Dolin is my favorite brand for Americanos. It’s not as sweet as others like Carpano Antico.

Vermouth storage tip: Vermouth is wine, so it will go bad with time like all wines do (but will keep longer than a regular bottle, thanks to the brandy). Opened bottles of vermouth will keep well in the refrigerator for one to two months.

3) Club soda

Club soda provides some fizzy dilution. Any unflavored sparkling water will work, though I love Fever Tree or Topo Chico for their plentiful small bubbles.

4) Slice of fresh orange

A slice of orange offers a burst of fresh, familiar orange flavor and aroma. Don’t skip it. To maximize the orange flavor, you can gently run the peel of the orange around the edge of your glass before dropping it in.

Americanos are such an easy cocktail to make. You don’t need a cocktail shaker or any bartending experience.

To make one, fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in equal parts of Campari and sweet vermouth, then add a big splash of club soda. Gently stir with a spoon, then add a slice of orange. Enjoy.

How to Adjust Your Americano Cocktail

The standard ratio is equal parts Campari and sweet vermouth. But who’s to say that you can’t tweak the recipe to your liking?

Make it less bitter

Campari’s bitter notes can take some getting used to. You can reduce the bitterness by using less Campari or balance it with extra sweet vermouth.

Make it less boozy

As written in the recipe below, the Americano cocktail is equally strong as a 1 1/2-ounce drink made with 80-proof liquor like vodka, gin, or tequila. To lower its alcohol content, use more club soda and less Campari and vermouth. Try just 1/2-ounce or 1-ounce each of the Campari and vermouth for a low-alcohol drink.

What to Serve with Your Americano

The Americano is commonly served as an aperitivo. Italian aperitivos are designed to stimulate the appetite before a meal. These cocktails are typically somewhat bitter, carbonated and more dry than sweet.

Serve your Americano cocktails with Italian or generally Mediterranean-flavored appetizers. Campari is bitter, and salty, sweet, creamy or fatty foods will take the edge off. You can’t go wrong with a cheese board.

Instructions

Notes

Make it lighter: For a lower-alcohol drink with a lighter flavor, use 1 ounce or less each of the Campari and vermouth.

Club soda recommendations: James Bond insists on Perrier, but I prefer Fever Tree or Topo Chico for the plentiful bubbles.

LOS ANGELES, United States — Congolese-American basketball great Dikembe Mutombo, renowned as one of the best defensive players in NBA history, has died aged 58, the league announced on Monday.

Mutombo, an eight-time NBA all-star, passed away surrounded by his family after a battle with brain cancer, the league added.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said of the 7ft 2in (2.18m) Hall-of-Famer in a statement.

“On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others,” Silver added, noting Mutombo’s extensive humanitarian work.

Mutombo, who played 18 seasons in the NBA, worked tirelessly to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo through his personal foundation.

Those efforts, which included donating millions of dollars to help build a hospital on the outskirts of Kinshasa, earned him multiple humanitarian accolades including the US President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“He was a humanitarian at his core,” said Silver, who often traveled alongside Mutombo in his work as the NBA’s Global Ambassador.

“He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of Congo and across the continent of Africa,” Silver said.

“I had the privilege of traveling the world with Dikembe and seeing first-hand how his generosity and compassion uplifted people.”

Mutombo retired from the NBA in 2009 after a dazzling playing career in which he became synonymous with defensive dominance.

After moving to the United States from his homeland to pursue basketball as a 21-year-old, Mutombo shone during his collegiate career with Georgetown before being chosen by the Denver Nuggets with the fourth pick of the 1991 NBA Draft.

Finger-wagging dominance

He played five seasons with Denver before spending another five years with the Atlanta Hawks, followed by stints with Philadelphia, the New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks and Houston Rockets.

Mutombo rapidly established himself as an elite defensive player, and became known for his signature finger wag whenever he blocked a shot — a move the NBA banned at one stage after ruling it to be a form of taunting.

Mutombo said the finger wag was a way of asserting his defensive dominance.

“The purpose was to stop anybody that was coming to the basket, and my mission was to win,” Mutombo said in a 2020 interview.

“And any time I would block shots, people would still be coming and trying to put a little bit on me. Then I used to shake my head every time I would block the shot. Then I said … ‘Those guys are not listening to me. Maybe if I start giving them the finger wag.’

“And I tell you what, I lost a lot of money because of that finger wag, man. I got so many technical fouls, but no referee would kick me out of the game.”

Mutombo, a four-time NBA defensive player of the year, finished his career with 3,289 blocks, second all-time behind only Hakeem Olajuwon with 3,830.

Mutombo played in two NBA finals — in 2001 and 2003 — but finished on the losing side on both occasions.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid led the tributes as news of Mutombo’s passing swept across the NBA on Monday as teams staged their pre-season media days.

“It’s a sad day, especially for us Africans and really the whole world because, other than what he’s accomplished on the basketball court, he was even better off the court,” the Cameroon-born former NBA MVP Embiid said.

“He’s one of the guys that I look up to, on and off the court. He’s done a lot of great things. He did a lot of great things for a lot of people, so he was a role model of mine.”

Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, who worked closely with Mutombo in his previous role as a general manager with Houston, described Mutombo as “just a great human being.”

“There aren’t very many guys like him,” Morey said. “When I was a rookie GM in this league, my first chance in Houston, he was somebody I went to all the time…amazing human being, what he did off the court for Africa. Rest in peace, Dikembe.”

Two people have died in a rugged mountainous area in central Greece while trying to help firefighters tackle a forest fire that has forced several villages to be evacuated, authorities have said.

The fire near Corinth, 140 kilometres (87 miles) west of Athens, was still burning on Monday, fanned by fierce winds.

Greek police spokeswoman Constantina Dimoglidou said the recovered bodies were severely burnt and that laboratory tests were necessary for their identification.

The fire brigade has launched an investigation, the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection said.

Smoke from the fire, which burned several homes and a church, hovered over the capital throughout Monday.

Greece, like other southern European countries, is plagued by destructive wildfires in the summer that have been exacerbated by global warming. The country this year has experienced its hottest-ever summer after its warmest winter on record, which left large areas with scant or no rain.

Over the past few months, authorities have had to cope with more than 4,500 wildfires in countryside left parched by a protracted drought and early summer heatwaves, in what was considered the most dangerous fire season in two decades.

I usually make my crock pot apple butter but so many questions about making it on the stove, so here is my stove top apple butter recipe. This spread is the best apple butter, and it’s so easy to make! While it simmers on the stove, your kitchen smell amazing. It’s great on so many things, everything from toast, stirred into oatmeal or overnight oats, over pancakes, to yogurt bowls, cottage cheese and more. September and October are the best months to go out east or upstate to visit the orchards and go apple picking. Whenever I do, I always make apple butter! It’s an easy way to transform oatmeal, yogurt, etc into a fall dish!

What is apple butter?

Apple butter is similar to applesauce, but they’re not the same thing. Apple butter is more concentrated and thicker than applesauce. It has more sugar and is cooked for a long time until the apples caramelize and turn a deep brown.

How healthy is apple butter?

Apple butter is made of whole apples, so there is some fiber and nutrition from the fruit. It does have a good amount of sugar, but you only need a little bit at a time since it’s so concentrated.

Here’s everything you need to make this apple butter recipe. See exact measurements in the recipe card below:

  • Apples are the main ingredient in apple butter, of course! You’ll need to peel, core, and finely chop six large apples. I like to use a variety of sweet red apples, like Honeycrisp, Gala, and Ambrosia.
  • Sugar: I use a mix of light brown sugar and raw sugar, also called turbinado sugar. If you don’t have raw sugar, substitute it with more brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup.
  • Spices: Cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg.

How to Make Apple Butter

Here’s the step-by-step directions to make this easy stove-top apple butter recipe. See exact measurements in the recipe card below:

  1. Put the apples in a Dutch oven or heavy pot with six tablespoons of water. Top them with the sugars and spices and mix well.
  2. Cover partially and cook on medium-low for 30 minutes, stirring a few times until the apples are tender and dark brown.
  3. Puree the apples with an immersion blender and simmer uncovered for 2 hours, stirring until thickened.
  4. Cover and cook on medium-low for two hours, stirring often until thickened.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) wants banks and other financial firms under its supervision to waive the service fee on electronic fund transfers, but only for personal transactions and payments to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as it doubles down on its efforts to transform the country into a cash-lite economy.

The BSP is collecting comments from stakeholders on a draft circular that would bring the cost of person-to-person electronic money transfers and micro-merchant payments to zero.

BSP-supervised financial institutions (BSFIs) have until Oct. 11 to submit their feedback.

Once the circular is approved by the policymaking Monetary Board (MB), the BSP said payment service providers (PSP) must make the necessary adjustments to comply with the new rules starting April 1, 2025.

At the same time, the moratorium on the increase in fees for InstaPay and PESONet transactions will also be lifted for the PSPs once they submit their proof of compliance with the circular.

Figures from the BSP showed current InstaPay fees for individual transactions range from as low as P8 to as high as P75, while PESONet transfers could cost between P8 and P600 for consumers.

Thresholds

Under the draft document, electronic fund transfers would be free of charge for personal transactions as long as they are within the “threshold” set by the BSP.

The central bank said no fees would be collected from person-to-person digital money transfers if done either as a remittance or lending of funds for “personal, family, or household purposes and not conducted in the ordinary course of businesses.”

Sending money via electronic channels is also considered a personal transaction—and therefore free of charge—if the number of digital fund transfers from an account does not regularly exceed 10 times a week.

Transaction fees will be collected for fund transfers beyond those thresholds, the regulator noted.

But the BSP said BSFIs “shall adopt reasonable and fair market-based pricing models” when collecting such fees.

Meanwhile, the BSP also wants zero fees for digital payments to small businesses, or firms whose monthly aggregate gross receipts do not exceed P250,000. Transactions that are not covered by this exemption must pay the fees, which should be “proportional to the cost of the services offered in order to sustain the business operations of the parties involved.”

Reducing transaction costs for electronic fund transfers would bode well for the central bank’s goal to boost digital transactions.

Latest data released by the BSP on Tuesday showed the share of digital payments to total retail payment transactions in the country grew to 52.8 percent in 2023, from 42.1 percent in 2022. That means out of the 5 billion total monthly transactions recorded last year, more than 2.6 billion of them were successfully converted to digital form.

It was a feat that blew away the expectations of the central bank, which was hoping to digitalize 50 percent of retail payments in the country by 2023.

The BSP said pandemic lockdowns that kept Filipinos at their homes for months and spurred the need for contactless transactions accelerated the shift to digital payments. Before the health crisis struck in 2019, the proportion of digital payments in the country was only at 14 percent.

Jose Teodoro Limcaoco, president and CEO of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and head of the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), said the BSP’s plan is “on the right track”.

Israel has warned that it will use “all the means” at its disposal to attack the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah amid growing fears of a ground assault on Lebanon.

“The next phase in the war against Hezbollah will begin soon,” Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told a meeting of local council heads in northern Israel on Monday, according to a statement from his office.

Earlier, Gallant told troops that Israel would “use all the means that may be required … from the air, from the sea, and on land.”

To allow displaced residents of the border area to return safely home, “we will employ all of our capabilities, and this includes you,” Gallant told troops.

Hezbollah began low-intensity strikes on Israeli troops a day after Israel launched its assault on Gaza last October in response to an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded near-daily fire across the Israel-Lebanon border for almost a year, prompting tens of thousands of people on both sides to flee their homes. Israel’s military escalated the fighting this month, leaving people across the region fearful of even more violence to come.

Some Israeli forces have already conducted small-scale ground operations in Lebanon, several international media outlets reported, and Israel’s air force has bombarded targets across the country in recent days.

Israel has killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several of the group’s top commanders in strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, and continued a campaign of air attacks on Hezbollah sites in eastern and southern Lebanon. More than 1,000 people have been killed since Israel escalated its attacks.

Hezbollah has continued to fire rockets and missiles at Israeli targets. On Monday, the Lebanese-armed group said its fighters targeted northern Israel’s Gesher Haziv settlement with a “salvo of rockets”. Earlier, Hezbollah said it had also fired rockets at the northern Israeli town of Safed.

In the group’s first broadcast address since Nasrallah’s assassination, Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem said it is prepared for any potential ground incursion and a long war.

When asked about reports that Israel is preparing for a “limited” ground invasion of Lebanon, US President Joe Biden called for a ceasefire.

Asked if he was comfortable with Israel’s plan, Biden replied: “I’m comfortable with them stopping.”

However, he did not elaborate on any plans to halt the conflict, or discuss US supplies of weapons and military aid to ally Israel.

Yossi Beilin, Israel’s former justice minister, told Al Jazeera that neither Hezbollah nor Israel “wants a ground battle” because “there is always a lethal price on both sides, people will be killed, and it should be prevented”.

He said that both sides need to renegotiate UN Resolution 1701, referring to the 2006 resolution to end the Israel-Hezbollah conflict at the time and pave the way for improved security along the border.

“I think we should rebuild the relations between Israel and Lebanon”, Beilin added.

Reporting from Marjayoun in southern Lebanon, Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan said that since the morning, Israeli air strikes have pounded the south of the country. He added that the Bekaa Valley, eastern Lebanon, as well as Baalbek and the road towards Syria have been hit.

“The death toll is climbing as well: 136 people killed in the last 24 hours, and that is something that is putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the emergency services. They’re simply running out of people and ambulances to be able to service the entire area,” he said.

Among those killed were three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine group, who were targeted in the Kola area of Beirut in Israel’s first attack on the Lebanese capital beyond the southern suburbs.

Fatah Sharif, a Hamas top commander in Lebanon, was also killed along with his wife, son and daughter in an air strike on El Buss refugee camp, one of 12 dedicated to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, in the southern port city of Tyre on Monday.

The Israeli military confirmed it had targeted him.

Sharif was also an employee of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and was suspended from the agency earlier this year following allegations regarding his politics. The UNRWA chief has denied knowing that Sharif was a Hamas commander.

“I never heard the word ‘commander’ before,” Philippe Lazzarini told reporters in Geneva. “What’s obvious for you today, was not obvious yesterday.”

More than 100,000 people have fled to Syria from Lebanon since the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah this month.

About 118,466 new displacements have occurred between September 23 and 27, the UN’s World Health Organization said in a situation report. The agency added that Lebanon’s health system also remains impacted and overstretched by a new escalation of violence in the country.

Lebanon’s acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati has said that the government is ready to fully implement the 2006 UN Security Council Resolution 1701 that aimed to end Hezbollah’s armed presence south of the Litani River as part of an agreement to stop war with Israel.

By 2027, it could require as much energy to power AI per year as it currently does to keep the lights on in Sweden or the Netherlands.

As big tech companies like Meta and Google build out costly AI infrastructure, the CEO of AI chip maker Nvidia, the third-largest company in the world by market cap, says the answer to the world’s energy needs could be nuclear.

“Nuclear is a wonderful way forward as one of the sources of energy, one of the sources of sustainable energy,” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told Bloomberg on Friday. “It won’t be the only one. We’re going to need energy from all sources and balance the availability and the cost of energy as well as the sustainability over time.”

Huang also told reporters that though AI will use more electricity, it will compensate for it with “incredible productivity.”

Huang’s remarks follow the news that Microsoft is reopening Three Mile Island, a nuclear station that has been closed for five years. Other AI leaders, like OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have said that nuclear power is one solution to AI’s energy demands. Altman has even invested $375 million into Helion Energy, a startup working to build the world’s first nuclear fusion power plant.

It’s undeniable that AI takes considerable energy to power. Google’s 2024 environmental report, released in July, showed a nearly 50% jump in emissions. Google attributed the bulk of the increase to energy needed for data centers and its supply chain.

“As we further integrate AI into our products, reducing emissions may be challenging due to increasing energy demands from the greater intensity of AI compute,” Google stated in the report.

Nvidia holds between 70% and 95% of the AI chip market. Its four biggest clients, which comprise over 40% of its revenue, are Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.

Nvidia’s market cap was $2.953 trillion at the time of writing.
