Foods To Eat (& Avoid) After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Inside: What are the best foods to eat after wisdom teeth removal? Here’s a day-by-day list of what to eat (and what to avoid), so you’re prepared.

Foods To Eat (& Avoid) After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Very soft fruit, applesauce, and canned fruit are easy on a sensitive mouth

When my son got all four wisdom teeth removed recently, I had an embarrassing flashback to when he had braces put on years earlier.

What both had in common: I knew for months it was coming but was somehow caught flat-footed.

As he was sleeping off the general anesthesia on the couch, I was ringing the oral surgeon’s office with questions, dashing to the store to fetch various foods and drinks, and wondering why I wasn’t better prepared. Again!

So if wisdom teeth extraction is on the horizon for your kid, I wanted to share helpful information on the right foods to eat (and avoid) the days and weeks after surgery, so at least you’ll be ready.

Why it matters

Because wisdom tooth removal is a dental surgery, it involves a healing process and a recovery period. The body needs nutrients and hydration–but you have to take care to let the surgical sites heal. A common complication is dry socket, a painful condition that happens when blood clots either don’t form or come out before the area has healed. The nerves can end up exposed, which is incredibly unpleasant (I had dry socket when I got my wisdom teeth out in my 20s and it was awful!).

TIP: Hydration is important, but don’t serve drinks with straws for the first few days. Drinking through a straw creates a suction in the mouth that can dislodge the blood clots that are forming.

What to Eat After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Here are good options for each day of recovery, plus the two weeks after wisdom teeth surgery. (Always follow your oral surgeon’s advice and instructions for types of foods to eat and what to avoid. These ideas are just suggestions that worked for us.)

A mostly liquid diet feels best the day of surgery

The day of surgery

Chances are, your child will be groggy, tired, and not in the mood to eat or drink very much. Their throat may also be sore. So mostly liquid foods and drinks are best.

What to have:

  • Yogurt (regular and Greek yogurt)
  • Yogurt drinks & kefir
  • Pudding (avoid chia or rice pudding right now; here’s a recipe for smooth Chocolate Tofu Pudding)
  • Smoothies & protein shakes, like my Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake
  • Broth such as chicken, beef, or veggie
  • Smooth applesauce (no chunks or pieces of peel)
  • Ice cream or “Nice Cream” (frozen bananas blended in blender or food processor)
  • Popsicles (our faves are Outshine Fruit Bars)
  • Jell-O
  • Ginger ale in case of nausea

TIP: My son used our Zoku Slush & Shake Maker to make slushies the first few days after surgery. You can put juice, lemonade, soda, and other beverages in it.

What to avoid:

  • Very hot beverages and food, which can be irritating on surgical sites
  • Foods and drinks with small pieces in them
  • Hard, crunchy foods that can injure the extraction site, like popcorn, chips, nuts, and seeds
  • Spicy foods
  • Foods with seeds and small grains that could get stuck in wounds

TIP: Protein helps the body heal. You can boost your child’s protein intake by including foods and drinks like milk, yogurt (especially Greek yogurt), protein powder added to foods like smoothies, oatmeal, and pancakes, and pudding made with milk.

The day after surgery

You’ll want to stick to a very soft food diet. Your child may still be in pain and not up for much chewing. Very soft foods and foods with a creamy texture will feel good.

What to have:

  • Anything from Day 1
  • Mashed potatoes and smooth gravy
  • Cottage cheese
  • Mashed/blended beans
  • Blended soups or cream soups with no pieces or chunks (warm, not hot)
  • Hummus (no raw veggies or pita yet)

TIP: Biting on a tea bag soaked in cool water (then wrung out) can help with pain and inflammation, thanks to the tannic acids in the tea.

What to avoid:

  • Foods and drinks with small pieces in them
  • Hard, crunchy foods that can injure the extraction site like popcorn, chips, nuts, and seeds
  • Spicy foods
  • Very hot foods and beverages, which can be irritating to the surgical area
  • Foods with seeds and small grains that could get stuck in wounds

TIP: To quickly make a small portion of mashed potatoes, peel and cube two russet potatoes. Place in a microwave-safe dish loosely covered with a lid. Microwave for 8-9 minutes or until soft when pierced with knife or fork. Blend with an immersion blender or hand mixer while adding milk, butter, and/or sour cream, plus salt, until smooth.

Mashed potatoes in a bowlMashed potatoes in a bowl
A bowl of mashed potatoes is a nice comfort food on day 2

Day 3

On the third day, your child will probably feel a lot better but it’s best to stick to soft meals and foods that require minimal chewing. Your child’s jaw may still ache too.

What to have:

  • Anything from Day 1 and Day 2
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Soft-cooked veggies
  • Tofu
  • Oatmeal (either homemade or instant oatmeal)
  • Soft-cooked pasta
  • Mac-n-cheese
  • Baked potatoes (either sweet potatoes or white potatoes)
  • Pancakes (try my Protein Pancakes)
  • Ripe banana
  • Canned fruit
  • PB&J (use a thin layer of peanut butter so it’s not super-sticky and avoid hard crusts of bread)

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: Healthy Meals and Snacks For Kids With Braces

What to avoid:

  • Very chewy foods
  • Crunchy, hard foods that can injure the extraction site like popcorn, chips, nuts, seeds, and crunchy crusts of bread
  • Spicy foods
  • Foods with seeds and small grains that could get stuck in wounds

Next 10-12 days

Your child can eat a lot more foods, but you’ll still want to default to semi-soft foods that don’t require lots of chewing. Their mouth may still be sensitive, and their surgical sites are still healing.

What to have:

Instant Pot Mac and CheeseInstant Pot Mac and Cheese
By day 3, your kid may be ready for soft meals like mac-n-cheese

What to avoid:

  • Raw, crunchy vegetables like whole baby carrots
  • Chewy, crusty bread (like baguettes)
  • Crunchy snacks like potato chips and tortilla chips with sharp edges
  • Spicy foods
  • Foods with seeds and small grains that could get stuck in the extraction area

After that, your child will probably be able to resume a regular diet with their favorite normal foods if it feels okay.

Other helpful things to have on hand

  • Frozen Ice packs
  • Extra gauze
  • Ibuprofen and Extra Strength Tylenol (or whatever type of over-the-counter pain reliever the surgeon recommends)
  • Warm compresses (moist, warm heat can help swelling after the first two days)

Presidents Cup 2024: 4 rare Team USA moments that will make you chuckle

Presidents Cup 2024: 4 rare Team USA moments that will make you chuckle

No one beats Team USA at partying after a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup win.

Remember in 2021 when the Americans beat the Europeans at Whistling Straits? Those guys partied hard afterward.

When Team USA beat the Internationals 18.5 to 11.5, no one should have expected less from them to start the party immediately. It quickly began after Keegan Bradley earned the point to clinch the win.

Most of the time, people see the players as stoic, even-keel guys who do not let anything bother them. However, they let loose and show off their actual personalities when it comes to these team events, especially when they are victorious.

Fans enjoy rare moments from team events. They make professional athletes feel more relatable. It is hilarious when the guys get drunk and talk to the media.

This entire team was in rare form on Sunday after their big victory.

Here are the four funniest moments after Team USA won the Presidents Cup on Sunday.

4. Max Homa’s thirsty video bomb

Presidents Cup, Max Homa

Max Homa played in Team USA’s last match of the day. He defeated Mackenzie Hughes 2 & 1 to give the Americans their 18th point.

Golf Channel stopped the camera on Captain Jim Furyk during the trophy presentation. When they did, the world saw Homa chugging a beer behind him.

Fans went nuts about it because it was relatable.

Golf Channel tagged Homa in the post and captioned it with an American flag emoji.

Of course, the Twitter/ X king explained himself, commenting he was the “last guy on the course today and had to make up for lost time.”

The original post garnered over 1.7 million views and almost 5,000 likes in less than 24 hours.

3. Captain Jim Furyk, players, assistant captains troll

Jim Furyk does not seem like someone who would drop the F-bomb unless he needs to.

However, he chose to drop one before the Cup when Golfweek writer Adam Schupak asked his thoughts on American fans rooting for the Internationals to make the Presidents Cup more competitive.

When Schupak took the mic at the victory press conference on Sunday, Furyk was not the only one who took advantage of it.

“Jim, you won’t say it right now,” Schauffele said while laughing.

Furyk explained that he was never angry with Schupak, and the two got a chuckle out of it.

Even though Furyk and Schupak were okay after the article was published, his assistant captains still took the opportunity to criticize the reporter.

“After the first presser, when we came in, we did our pairings, and I walked out; I actually gave you a little fist bump, and two of my assistants told you to go F yourself. That was my favorite,” Furyk recalled.

If this interaction does not tell the fans how seriously Team USA takes the Presidents Cup, I’m not sure anything else will. Nonetheless, it produced a hilarious moment in the press conference that caused everyone to laugh.

2. “Tarps Off:” Kevin Kisner keeps promise with Max Homa

Max Homa and Kevin Kisner betted with each other on social media after they saw two Solheim Cup caddies take off their shirts when Team USA’s Allison Lee holed out from the fairway.

Kisner told the 33-year-old he would take off his shirt if he did the same at the Presidents Cup. Homa made it happen on the first hole Sunday as he holed out for an eagle.

Afterward, the six-time PGA Tour winner explained he saw Kisner going in the opposite direction.

“I looked back, and he was scampering down 9 fairway, trying to run away from me,” Homa said. “I don’t blame him.”

Kisner kept his promise, and cameras witnessed it all.

The excitement on both their faces was priceless. Homa could not stop smiling and patting Kisner’s stomach.

It was hilarious to watch.

Coming into this week, Homa explained that he set a few goals for himself.

“I had three checkmarks,” he said. “One was to win the Presidents Cup with these boys. Two was to have a great time. And three, to get Kis to take his shirt off. So I went three for three.”

Homa accomplished what he set out to do and, in the meantime, gave golf fans something hilarious to watch.

1. Kevin Kisner is the beer man for Team USA

At this point, calling Kevin Kisner a national treasure feels safe. He is the life of the party.

Reporters posted videos of him entering the media room with a red cooler stocked full of beer.

The moment gets better, though.

He did not just bring the beers but also passed them out to players in the middle of the press conference.

Kisner took his assistant captain role seriously and did not disappoint.

The guys were able to keep their buzz going and finish up the press conference on a light note.

It’s so funny to see them relax like they did with the media. They worked hard to beat the Internationals, so they should enjoy the victory as long as possible.

Team USA capped off their victorious Presidents Cup week with hilarious rare moments that only golf fans can appreciate.

Fishy diplomacy: What a hilsa ban reveals about India-Bangladesh tensions | Busi…

Hilsa is Bangladesh’s national fish. Locally known as ilish, it is cherished as the queen among fish and forms part of the culinary identity of both Bangladesh and the bordering Indian state of West Bengal.

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina used the fish – which is found in the Bay of Bengal and in rivers – as a tool of diplomacy to foster ties with its western neighbour, India.

But Bangladesh’s interim government’s decision to briefly ban exports of the fish to India in September caused a culinary crisis of sorts ahead of the festival of Durga Puja in India. Hilsa fish cooked in mustard sauce is a popular delicacy during the festival. Some experts viewed the move as a diplomatic rebuke for New Delhi’s backing of Hasina, who has taken shelter in India after her removal in late August.

Dhaka insisted the ban aimed to reduce the cost of the freshwater fish domestically amid a leaner harvest this year. It, however, reversed its order within two weeks.

So what is the fish at the centre of it all, and is it more than just a popular meal?

What is hilsa, the fish at the centre of the India-Bangladesh diplomatic row?

Bangladesh exports 70 percent of the world’s hilsa. But the prized catch is increasingly becoming rare and expensive, owing to overfishing, increased demand and environmental challenges like climate change.

Fishermen this year say they are also struggling to catch adequate amounts of hilsa due to rough sea conditions.

The exports add to the scarcity, with the fish unaffordable to most Bangladeshis due to its high cost. In 2024, the price of a 1.5kg hilsa fish reached about $15 (1,800 Bangladeshi taka) in local markets, compared with about $10.9 (1,300 taka) last year.

At 550,000 to 600,000 tonnes a year, hilsa contributes about 12 percent of Bangladesh’s total fish production, supporting approximately 500,000 fishers directly and two million people in related industries.

Some cherished staples of local cuisine include bhapa ilish (steamed hilsa), ilish polao (pilaf rice with hilsa), and shorshe ilish (hilsa in mustard sauce).

Did Bangladesh impose a ban on hilsa exports to India?

In September, Dhaka imposed an export ban on hilsa, specifically targeting shipments to India. This came in the run-up to the Durga Puja festival in October when demand typically peaks across the border.

Fisheries officials explained that the ban was necessary to prioritise domestic supply and manage the declining hilsa population.

“We cannot allow ilish to be exported while our own people cannot buy them. This year, I have instructed the Ministry of Commerce to prevent any ilish exports to India during Durga Puja,” Farida Akhter, adviser to the Bangladesh Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock told the Dhaka Tribune.

However, weeks later, the Commerce Ministry reversed the ban and approved a 3,000-tonne shipment to India.

“Against the backdrop of appeals by the exporters, approval has been given to export 3,000 tonnes of hilsa fish (to India), fulfilling the specific conditions on the occasion of the upcoming Durga Puja,” read the ministry’s statement.

Hilsa prices have shot up sharply in India as Dhaka reduced exports by 1,000 tonnes. But the government has failed to bring down the prices in Bangladesh.

“A syndicate of fishermen who smuggled hilsa to India kept the price high,” said Khandakar Tahmid Rejwan, a research data analyst at the Bangladesh Peace Observatory under the Centre for Alternatives.

An expert from India said the brief ban marked “a firm departure” from Hasina’s practice of using the fish as a symbol of goodwill and friendship between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Hasina first used the fish as a diplomatic tool when she came to power in 1996. She gifted hilsa to then-West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu ahead of a landmark agreement on sharing water, a major bilateral issue between the neighbours.

In 2016, the former Bangladeshi prime minister sent a consignment of hilsa to Mamata Banerjee, who heads the government of West Bengal bordering Bangladesh. A year later, former President Pranab Mukherjee, a prominent Bengali leader of the time, was gifted hilsa as a gesture of friendship.

But the interim government is likely to diverge from Hasina’s pro-India foreign policy, according to an expert on India-Bangladesh relations.

The move by the interim government “compromises the goodwill” between the two nations, Sohini Bose, associate fellow at the Observer Research Foundation in Kolkata, told Al Jazeera via email.

Is this the first such ban?

No.

Bangladesh imposed a ban on hilsa exports to India in 2012 following disputes over a water-sharing agreement. This was eventually lifted in January 2018 as a goodwill gesture.

Additionally, over the years Hasina’s government frequently made exceptions to the ban by “gifting” hundreds of tonnes of the fish ahead of Durga Puja.

Bangladesh also periodically imposes local bans on fishing hilsa to protect it during breeding periods.

The main ban is enforced for 22 days during October and has been a practice since 2007. This restriction during hilsa’s spawning season gives it time to reproduce undisturbed.

The downside is that this poses economic challenges for fishermen, many of whom rely on hilsa for their livelihood.

Hasina has also gifted locally made sarees and mangoes to leaders across the border.

In 2021, Hasina reportedly sent 2,600kg of Haribhanga mangoes to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The gesture came as Bangladesh faced a delay in the supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses from India.

Why are ties between India and Bangladesh strained?

India backed Hasina until the end of her 15-year rule, which rights group say was marked by human rights abuses, electoral manipulations and a crackdown on opposition parties.

New Delhi also observed silence on a government crackdown that killed more than 300 protesters, shortly before she fled Bangladesh. India’s hosting of Hasina has not gone down well with the interim government, which has sought Hasina’s extradition – a demand New Delhi is unlikely to honour.

Many in Bangladesh perceive New Delhi’s backing of Hasina as enabling her heavy-handed approach.

In her 15-year rule, Hasina fostered close ties with India, particularly through security cooperation agreements, which critics and opposition parties said were biased in favour of New Delhi.

Vilification of Bangladeshis by the Hindu nationalist government in India as “infiltrators” and “termites” has also angered Bangladeshis. Last week, Dhaka condemned “a highly deplorable” speech by Indian Home Minister Amit Shah.

Addressing a political rally in the eastern state of Jharkhand, Shah said if a BJP government was elected in the state, “We will hang every Bangladeshi infiltrator upside down to give them a lesson”.

Dhaka has also complained about the killing of its citizens at the border by India’s Border Security Force. Rights groups have slammed the “unlawful killings and abuse of Bangladeshi people at the border”.

Rising Islamophobia and attacks against Muslims under Modi have also instilled anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh.

Moreover, the Hasina government’s trade deals with Indian corporations also came under scrutiny, with critics accusing her of signing deals that benefitted Indian companies.

The Teesta River dispute also remains a major point of contention between Bangladesh and India, as both countries rely heavily on its water for agriculture. Bangladesh has long sought a fairer allocation of the river’s flow, arguing that the current arrangement – controlled primarily by India – causes water shortages during the dry season.

Additionally, the sudden release of water during heavy rainfall has contributed to flash floods in Bangladesh, including in August this year.

Officials at Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre told Al Jazeera that unlike in the past, India did not issue a warning to its neighbour about the release of water last month. India’s Ministry of External Affairs dismissed the reports, calling them “factually not correct”.

India, particularly its West Bengal state, has resisted changes to the existing river-sharing agreement, citing its own agricultural needs.

India’s ties to Hasina’s party, the Awami League, go back to when the party was fighting for liberation from Pakistan in the 1970s. New Delhi has cultivated close ties with the secular Awami League and has seen the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami as soft on Pakistan.

What have the two countries said about the diplomatic tensions?

Interim leader Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has called for a reset in relations. Earlier this month, he criticised Hasina for giving directives from her haven in India, adding that her continued interference in Bangladeshi politics could exacerbate tensions.

He has also warned India to move away from its narrative that Islamist forces, supported by groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, are overtaking the country.

India’s Fish Importers Association earlier this month in a letter urged Dhaka to allow exports of the fish, especially for the festival.

What’s the future for India-Bangladesh ties?

Rejwan, the researcher based in Dhaka, says “the resentment that was building in common people is reflecting in a more formal diplomatic channel”, adding that previously the relationship was only warm at the highest level.

He says, however, that there is potential for India and Bangladesh’s relationship to be mutually beneficial, but that it must be based on equity and see progress with key issues such as border killings.

“If the government fails to address these and maintain a balance with New Delhi, then it will be perceived as similar to Sheikh Hasina’s regime,” he added.

Bose from the Observer Research Foundation believes the two countries have the potential to improve relations due to the existing, “natural” interdependence.

“With adjacent territories across the world’s fifth-longest boundary, Bangladesh and India have several common resources from trade of daily essentials to familial connections,” Bose said.

“This geographic reality is indisputable despite any political transition, which makes it necessary for India and Bangladesh to maintain a functional relationship.”

Protein Oatmeal Recipe • Kath Eats

This protein oatmeal recipe packs 30 grams of protein per serving and is a delicious and nutritious breakfast to start your day!

You probably know that oatmeal is one of my tried and true favorite breakfast foods ever. It’s incredibly versatile, I could eat it 100 different ways!

Not only is it packed with fiber, but it also boasts a wealth of vitamins and minerals that contribute to a balanced diet. However, one thing oatmeal isn’t particularly high in is protein. Adding protein to your oatmeal can help reduce cravings and increase feelings of fullness, making it a more complete meal.

Protein is certainly having its moment, I mean, for good reason. It’s an important macronutrient that contributes to building and repairing muscles and bones and also to make hormones and enzymes.

Today, I am sharing a protein oatmeal recipe – a spin-off of my favorite whipped banana oatmeal – that you can try any day of the week. This recipe combines the heartiness of oats with the sustaining power of protein, ensuring you stay satisfied and energized throughout your busy day.

Best Protein Oatmeal Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup protein oats* or rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 ripe banana, thinly sliced
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/3 cup whole milk cottage cheese
  • 1 Tbsp almond butter
  • dollop of Greek yogurt (optional)

ingredients for protein oatmeal recipe

How To Make Protein Oatmeal

Step 1

Cook the oats by combining protein (or rolled) oats, water, and milk in a saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Slice a half of a ripe banana into very thin pieces into the pot.

Step 3

Walk away for a few minutes while the oatmeal heats.

Step 4

Once it begins to bubble, stir vigorously at times to “whip” the banana into the oats. The oats will take about 5 minutes on medium heat from start to finish to fully absorb the liquid. They’re done when they reach your desired consistency.

Step 5

Take off heat and stir in protein powder and cottage cheese.

Step 6

Pour into your bowl and add desired toppings (like fresh berries and nut butter) – enjoy!

Recipe Notes

  • Add a sprinkle of chia seeds while cooking for extra fiber.
  • Drizzle your bowl of oatmeal with a touch of maple syrup for a bit of sweetness; see this post for more healthy ways to sweeten oatmeal.
  • Feel free to use a plant based protein powder if that’s your preference; I personally wouldn’t choose chocolate protein powder, but that’s up to you!
  • You could use steel cut oats if you prefer that texture. Note: the cooking time will likely be longer.

What are protein oats?

Bob’s Red Mill Protein Oats pack 10 grams of protein per serving from just one simple ingredient—whole grain rolled oats—with no added protein powders. Instead, they’re grown from a special conventionally bred variety that is higher in protein and less processed than traditional oats. Not sponsored.

A youth organization led by the grandson of the late actor, film director, and politician Fernando Poe Jr. is calling on the government to improve the ease of doing business in the country.

FPJ Panday Bayanihan president Brian Poe Llamanzares cited its impact on the country’s jobs situation which is among the top concerns of young people today.

According to Llamanzares, improving the ease of doing business will attract more investments to the Philippines and in turn, help create more jobs.

“When I talk to our stakeholders here, the ease of doing business remains a big problem,” Llamanzares said on the sidelines of the youth congress in Manila that his group organized over the weekend.

“We should minimize red tape and we should find ways to encourage our entrepreneurs here in the Philippines,” he added.

Llamanzares likewise highlighted the significance of the youth sector in the Philippines, citing that there are about 30 million young people between the ages of 10 to 24 that make up 28 percent of the population.

“With rapid technological advancement and innovation, and of course democratic access to information, the youth today are now more socially aware of pressing issues and problems even at a national level,” Llamanzares said.

Kenneth Walker III’s somersault first down is NFL’s wildest broken tackle this s…

Play through the whistle.

That refrain is drilled into your head as a young football player, with coaches stressing that point from the time you first put on the pads until the day you take them off. Regardless of level, that refrain guides your every move on the football field.

Monday night against the Detroit Lions, Seattle faced a 2nd and 4 at the Detroit 42-yard line. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith dropped into the pocket and looked to his left, where Seattle was running a curl/flat combination with Tyler Lockett on the curl route, and Walker releasing to the flat. Smith threw to his running back who looked to be wrapped up short of the first-down marker by running back Alex Anzalone, but Walker simply refused to go down:

Anzalone initially swung Walker to the turf, but the running back landed on top of the linebacker, prompting Walker to keep fighting for the first down. Anzalone then tried to tackle Walker again, only to have the running back somersault over him, and eventually past the first-down marker.

Here is another look at Walker’s incredible effort:

That effort paid off, as the Seahawks eventually finished the drive with a touchdown.

Israeli strikes kill three civilians in Syria’s Damascus, state TV says | Israel…

State-run Syrian Arab News Agency says TV anchor killed in Israeli attack on Syrian capital.

Three civilians have been killed and nine others wounded in Israeli strikes on Syria’s capital Damascus, state-run media has reported.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) earlier reported that its television anchor Safaa Ahmad was killed on Tuesday in “treacherous Israeli aggression” targeting the Syrian capital.

Footage posted on social media appeared to show a car engulfed in flames on a street surrounded by apartment blocks.

It was not clear if the presenter was among the three civilian casualties referred to by state media.

Israel’s Ministry of Defense and military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The reports of Israeli strikes on the Syrian capital came as its military began “limited, localised, and targeted” ground raids in neighbouring Lebanon in a major escalation of its offensive targeting the armed group Hezbollah.

Israeli attacks killed at least 95 people and wounded 172 others across Lebanon on Monday, according to Lebanese authorities.

In his first address since Israel’s killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s deputy leader Naim Qassem said on Monday that its forces were “prepared and ready” for a ground invasion.

“We will win, just as we won in our confrontation with Israel in 2006,” Qassem said in a video message.

The spillover of fighting into Lebanon and Syria has stoked fears that the war in Gaza could escalate into a broader regional conflict.

On Monday, United States President Joe Biden called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week rejected proposals for a ceasefire with Hezbollah after the US, the European Union, Australia and a number of other countries issued a joint call for a 21-day pause in fighting.

“We are continuing to strike Hezbollah with full force,” Netanyahu told reporters as he arrived in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

“And we will not stop until we achieve all our goals, chief among them, the return of the residents of the north securely to their homes.”

Baked Apple Cider French Toast

This baked apple cider French toast combines some of the fall season’s favorite flavors: apples, cinnamon, pecans, and apple cider. Dip slices of crusty bread in a cider-infused custard, and then top with spiced apples cooked in a brown sugar sauce. Serve this delicious dish with maple syrup or salted caramel for an extra flavorful start to a crisp autumn morning.

One reader, Angela, commented:I love fall apples and apple cider, and this recipe sounded great. It did not disappoint! I made it for a family dinner as dessert—like bread pudding with a lovely fall twist—and it was every bit as delicious as I could have imagined… I’ll absolutely be making this again. A lot! ★★★★★

Baked Apple Cider French Toast

The fall baking season is here, and every year, I love diving right in with fresh apples and cinnamon. Have you tried my fresh apple cake or apple cinnamon rolls yet?

Today I’m sharing quite the indulgent breakfast… or should I just call it “dessert masquerading as breakfast”? It’s the apple version of my pumpkin French toast casserole, and certainly a special treat if you’re entertaining guests, or if you just went apple picking. Pick up some apple cider while you’re at the farm market!

Here’s Why You’ll Love It:

  • Spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, just like apple pie
  • Loaded with extra brown sugared-apples
  • Prep it the night before and bake it in the morning
  • Easier to prepare than regular French toast… no individual slices to cook!
  • Satisfies those sweet fall flavor cravings and feeds a crowd
  • A wonderful way to use fresh apple cider… have you tried my apple cider sangria yet?

Let’s jump right in.

Best Bread to Use for Baked Apple Cider French Toast

Tip #1: Start with a quality loaf. Bread is the main ingredient in any baked French toast casserole, so don’t skimp here. Flimsy sliced sandwich bread won’t do the casserole any favors because it’s unable to soak up excess moisture from the custard—the entire dish will taste flat, soggy, and wet. And it definitely wouldn’t stand up to the apple topping! I recommend using sturdy, flavorful bread such as challah, French bread, sourdough, brioche, homemade artisan bread, or even this homemade cinnamon swirl bread. Challah is my #1 recommendation and you can usually find it in the bakery section of the grocery store.

Tip #2: Let it get stale. When you have the quality bread you need, let it sit out for a few hours to become stale. As with breakfast casserole, French toast is best when the bread is somewhat stale. Cut the loaf into thick slices, then let it sit out uncovered for a few hours. The less moisture in the bread, the more apple cider custard it can soak up!

Tip #3: Try this shortcut: If you don’t have time to let the bread sit out and get stale, you can lightly toast the slices in the oven at 300°F for about 10 minutes. I do this a lot… so forgetful!

While I love this baked apple cider French toast with thick bread slices lined up vertically in the baking dish, you can slice the bread into cubes if you’d prefer, like we do for this cream cheese French toast casserole.

Here’s Everything Else You Need:

ingredients on counter including apple cider, apples, eggs, pecans, spices, vanilla, salt, and sugar.

After you have your slightly stale slices of quality bread, whisk together the egg custard.

  1. Eggs: You need 6 large eggs.
  2. Apple Cider: Apple cider is fresh, unfiltered, unpasteurized apple juice, and it’s deeply flavorful. Don’t mistake this ingredient for alcoholic, carbonated cider, or for apple cider vinegar—that is not a mistake you want to make! If you have extra apple cider, make apple cider chicken next!
  3. Milk: I use whole milk in this recipe, but you can use lower-fat or nondairy milk if necessary. Half-and-half or heavy cream would make for a richer, creamier custard, but I find it makes the apple French toast casserole too heavy.
  4. Brown Sugar: With its higher molasses content, brown sugar is the best choice for sweetening this apple cider French toast.
  5. Orange Zest: A little hint of citrus brightens up all the deep apple spice flavors in this French toast casserole. I tested the recipe with and without orange zest, and taste testers agreed that the hint of fresh citrus really brought out the fresh apple cider flavor.
  6. Vanilla Extract, Spices, & Salt: The flavor-enhancers no apple baked good should be without. (By the way, if you love apple cinnamon goodness, and you’re up for a baking project, try my apple cinnamon babka sometime!)

Now turn your attention to the apples; the remaining ingredients you see above are used next.

Briefly Cook the Apples

Peel and slice 4 medium-size apples using a peeler (that’s an affiliate link to the one I use and love!), just like we do for apple cobbler. Not sure which apples are best? See my Best Apples for Baking page. I usually use 2 tart Granny Smith apples and 2 sweet Honeycrisp or Pink Lady apples here.

A quick turn on the stove bathes the spiced apple slices in a rich, buttery apple cider sauce that caramelizes the apples as they cook. Cook for about 8 minutes, until the apples are crisp-tender, and the sauce has slightly thickened (and smells incredible). Take the skillet off heat, and stir in the pecans.

Warning: At this point, you may forget all about the French toast you were making and want to just eat the apples with a spoon. Try to stay focused. I know it’s hard!!

Dip the slices of bread in the egg custard. I usually do this before I cook the apples.

white bowl with egg mixture inside and shown again with a slice of bread being dipped in.

And arrange in a greased casserole dish.

Spoon the apple/pecan mixture over the soaked bread slices. I like to press some of the apple slices down in between the bread slices. Pour the remaining brown sugar sauce over top of everything.

Try a crumb topping: This would also be amazing with the crumb topping from this pumpkin French toast casserole. Feel free to add it if you want to level up your baked French toast game!

At this point, you can cover the apple cider French toast and refrigerate it overnight, or for at least 3 hours so the bread can soak and the flavors can infuse. After that, it’s time to bake:

Can I use apple juice instead of apple cider?

You can, but you’ll lose some flavor. Apple cider is fresh, unfiltered, and typically unpasteurized, so it’s more like the raw, purer version of juiced apples. Apple juice has had the pulp and sediment filtered out, and is pasteurized to extend its shelf life. If you can’t find fresh apple cider, you can make homemade apple cider in a slow cooker.

What kind of apples are best for this baked apple cider French toast?

When it comes to baking with apples, it’s best to use apples with a firm, crisp texture, so they don’t bake down into mush. I love varieties like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Fuji, Pink Lady, Braeburn, and Jazz apples. Steer clear of softer, mealier apple varieties like McIntosh and Red Delicious. If the apple has a crisp, juicy crunch when you bite into it, that’s likely a good one for baking!

Serving Apple Cider French Toast

Drizzle the top of the warm baked apple cider French toast (either the whole thing, or individual servings) with maple syrup or salted caramel before serving, and/or sprinkle with a dusting of confectioners’ sugar. For a side dish, this is a wonderful French toast casserole to serve with fresh fruit and something you can cook on the stove like bacon or sausage.

Description

Start this baked apple cider French toast casserole ahead of time so you can wake up and bake a deliciously spiced fall breakfast or brunch! Be sure to use apple cider, the nonalcoholic beverage, and not apple cider vinegar.

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread into 1-inch-wide slices. Let the sliced bread sit out uncovered for a few hours or up to 1 day. (If you don’t have enough time, see recipe Note below for a shortcut.)
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish (or any 3.5–4-quart baking dish), or spray with nonstick spray.
  3. In a medium bowl preferably with a pour spout, whisk the eggs, apple cider, milk, brown sugar, orange zest, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt together until combined. Set aside.
  4. Dip each slice of bread in the egg custard mixture, soaking both sides. Place in the prepared baking dish, lining the slices up next to each other. Pour any remaining custard over the top. Set aside.
  5. Cook the apples: Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, apple cider, brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and salt. Cook for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples have slightly softened. Remove from heat and stir in the pecans.
  6. Spoon the apple mixture over the top of the bread slices, and pour any remaining sauce from the skillet over the top of everything.
  7. Cover the casserole tightly and place in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours and up to 1 day. This gives the bread a chance to soak up the custard and is a key step in this recipe.
  8. Remove casserole from the refrigerator and preheat oven to 350°F (177°C).
  9. Bake casserole uncovered for 20 minutes, and then cover with aluminum foil and bake for an additional 25–35 minutes or until center appears set and is no longer runny. The total time this casserole takes is 45–55 minutes.
  10. Remove from the oven and cool for 5 minutes before serving. Casserole deflates slightly as it cools. Feel free to sift a dusting of confectioners’ sugar on top, and/or drizzle maple syrup or salted caramel sauce on entire casserole or on individual servings.
  11. Cover leftovers tightly and store in the refrigerator for up to 2–3 days.

Notes

  1. Make Ahead & Freezing Instructions: You can prepare the French toast casserole through step 6 up to 1 day in advance before baking. Cover tightly and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake it. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature while your oven preheats. You can freeze leftover baked and cooled casserole for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then reheat to your liking in the microwave, or cover and bake in a 300°F (149°C) oven until warm throughout, at least 20 minutes.
  2. Special Tools (affiliate links): Vegetable Peeler | 9×13-inch Baking Dish (or any 3.5–4-quart baking dish such as this one) | Glass Mixing Bowl or Bowl with Pour Spout | Whisk | Sieve
  3. Bread: Crusty, somewhat stale bread is best for French toast casseroles. If you’re in a rush and don’t have time to let the bread sit out as instructed in step 1, lay the bread slices on baking sheets in a single layer and bake in a 300°F (149°C) oven for 10 minutes.
  4. Apple Cider: Make sure you’re using apple cider the (nonalcoholic, non-carbonated) drink, not apple cider vinegar. You can use apple juice instead if cider if you must, but you’ll lose some flavor. Learn how to make a homemade apple cider beverage in a slow cooker.
  5. Milk: Whole milk is best because it produces a rich casserole that isn’t too heavy. You can use lower-fat or nondairy milks in a pinch. Half-and-half works, too. I found heavy cream too heavy and rich for this casserole.
  6. Nut Free: You can leave out the pecans if desired.
