Davante Adams trade makes perfect sense for these 6 teams after latest rumors

0
Davante Adams trade makes perfect sense for these 6 teams after latest rumors

Davante Adams’ time with in Las Vegas appears to be drawing close to an end. Speculation about whether the receiver would stay with the struggling Raiders has ramped up in recent weeks with the team being unable to really utilize him, Adams being quiet about his future, and the most obvious conclusion shaping up to be trading him away to a contender.

That eventuality became more real on Tuesday afternoon with the news that the Raiders began to warm up to the idea, and had begun the process of taking trade calls on Adams.

In order to make a deal work a team would need at least $13M in open cap space to take on Adams’ contract. The good news is almost half the league has that money available, but that doesn’t mean Adams is a great fit on all those rosters. In order to make this work he would need to land on a better team than the Raiders, not just a lateral move — and from there it would need to be in a place where he can make an impact in order to be happy.

Here are the 6 teams that actually makes sense.

San Francisco 49ers

This is an offense that’s still reeling from the ongoing injury issues of Christian McCaffrey. Not only did the 49ers lose their star running back, but one of their best pass catchers in the process. This has been amplified as Brandon Aiyuk has struggled to make an impact in 2024.

San Francisco’s window is open right now, and feels as though it’s starting to close. It’s unclear when rookie Ricky Pearsall will be able to take reps, meaning this team needs weapons. With ample cap space to make it work, adding Adams to the offense means this team can hopefully get back on track, using Aiyuk in more creative ways out of the slot while Adams can hold down the outside.

If trying to win a championship is the goal for both parties (and it is), then this becomes one of the best landing spots.

Washington Commanders

It’s wild to think of Washington being a prime landing spot, but it’s certainly become that. The offense is rolling with Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels, but the team is in dire need of another receiver outside of Terry McLaurin.

As it stands TE Zach Ertz is the second leading receiver on the team, with isn’t something that should be working. Adding Davante Adams to the mix just pushes the potential for this team to win the NFC East even higher, and that’s exactly what new ownership wants.

Realistically the Commanders aren’t in championship contention, but there’s a lot to like about rejuvenating Adams’ career in an offense on the way up. It also ensures he’ll get plenty of targets.

Arizona Cardinals

This team likes going three wide, but there are questions about the talent they have after Marvin Harrison Jr. Arizona would be a landing spot that wouldn’t impact the Raiders at all, while also putting Adams in a role where he can be a difference maker, and a mentor to Harrison Jr.

The biggest issue is whether this would be seen as a lateral move. The Cardinals have a lot of potential, but a lot of that has been unrealized in 2024. It’s highly likely that Arizona doesn’t mesh with what Adams is looking for, but they shouldn’t be counted out in a situation where fewer teams than expected end up making calls.

New York Jets

At this point the Jets will be in on anything, and everything that gets them closer to a championship. Adams checks all the boxes as being a difference maker on offense and having ample familiarity with Aaron Rodgers.

Would he be enough to turn the Jets into Super Bowl contenders? Not on his own, but he pushes this team closer — and they are all-in on making this work for one year and worrying about the future of the organization later.

Solely because of his relationship with Rodgers the Jets should be considered a favorite.

Green Bay Packers

Could a comical homecoming to Green Bay be on the cards? Don’t write it off.

The Packers are currently fighting to contend in a brutal NFC North and they’ve unfortunately ended up with a lot of players who aren’t living up to their potential. The Josh Jacobs splash turned into a drip, Christian Watson hasn’t progressed, and Jordan Love needs another target.

It’s unclear what the feelings are between these two parties, but it makes a lot of sense for Adams to return where it all began.

Indianapolis Colts

A wild card team are the Colts, who are swinging well above their weight class in 2024 thanks to coaching. There’s no doubt the team has solid WR talent in Alec Pierce and Michael Pittman Jr., but there’s very real wild card potential out there for the Colts if they can keep feeding their offense.

Adams’ vertical ability marries well with Anthony Richardson’s massive arm, and it could be the difference maker the team needs to get away from 2-2 and start putting up more wins. If that appeals to Adams then it could be a really compelling landing spot inside a Shane Steichen offense that could rejuvenate his career.

Three teams to watch if they can free up cap space

Kansas City Chiefs: Goes without saying with Rashee Rice being hurt

Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson needs receivers, water remains wet

Pittsburgh Steelers: Could be a huge impact across from George Pickens with Calvin Austin III in the slot

Iran’s missile attack against Israel: What we know and what comes next | Israel …

Iran’s missile attack against Israel: What we know and what comes next | Israel …

Israel promises to retaliate after barrage of Iranian missiles fired in response to killings of Hamas, Hezbollah leaders.

Iran has launched an unprecedented attack against Israel, firing a barrage of missiles at the country in the latest escalation amid weeks of soaring violence and tensions in the region.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday that it fired missiles at Israel in response to deadly Israeli attacks against people in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the assassinations of top IRGC, Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.

Alarms sounded in Israel on Tuesday evening as the missiles fell on major cities and towns.

Israel and its top ally, the United States, said their respective militaries worked together to shoot down most of the nearly 200 projectiles that were fired by Iran.

The Israeli army said only a “few” hits were recorded in central and southern parts of the country while two people were injured from falling shrapnel in the Tel Aviv area, according to Israel’s emergency service.

Here’s what we know about the attack, the wider context, and what could come next.

What happened?

  • The exact details of the Iranian operation remain unclear, but the IRGC said in a statement that the missiles were aimed at “vital military and security targets” in Israel.
  • The IRGC said later that its attack was aimed specifically at three military bases in the Tel Aviv area.
  • The attack, which was accompanied by a large-scale cyberattack, also employed Iran’s new Fatah hypersonic ballistic missiles for the first time, according to Iranian state media.
  • The Israeli military said it intercepted “a large number” of the 180 ballistic missiles launched by Iran, but that there were “isolated” impacts in central and southern Israel. The IRGC said that 90 percent of the projectiles fired hit their targets.
  • US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the American military “coordinated closely” with its Israeli counterparts to shoot down the projectiles.
  • “US naval destroyers joined Israeli air defence units in firing interceptors to shoot down inbound missiles,” Sullivan told reporters at the White House.
  • Sullivan said no deaths were reported in Israel: “In short, based on what we know at this point, this attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective,” he said.

What was the attack in response to?

  • The IRGC said Tuesday’s attack was in response to the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Lebanese group Hezbollah, and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoushan last week in Beirut, as well as the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July.
  • Experts have warned over the past year that the Middle East was on the brink of regional war amid Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 41,000 Palestinians since October 2023.
  • Lebanese group Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel shortly after the Gaza war began, saying it aimed to support Palestinians in the besieged enclave.
  • The Israeli military has been exchanging fire with Hezbollah across the Israel-Lebanon border since that time, displacing tens of thousands of people in both countries.
  • Over the past month, the Israeli military escalated its attacks on Lebanon, striking targets in the capital Beirut and fuelling more fears of an all-out war.

How have world leaders reacted to the Iranian attack?

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Iran had “made a big mistake” and “will pay for it”.
  • Israel’s envoy to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said the country “will take all necessary measures to protect the citizens of Israel”: “As we have previously made clear to the international community, any enemy that attacks Israel should expect a severe response,” Danon wrote on social media.
  • Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a post on X that the attack was a “decisive response” to Israel’s “aggressions”. “Let Netanyahu know that Iran does not seek war, but it stands firmly against any threat,” he wrote. “Do not enter into a conflict with Iran.”
  • Mohammad Javad Zarif, the strategic adviser to Pezeshkian, said “Iran has an inherent right of self-defence against repeated Israeli armed attacks against Iranian territory and its citizens.”
  • Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs Gaza, welcomed the Iranian attack as “heroic” and said it sent “a strong message to the Zionist enemy and its fascist government that will help deter and rein in their terrorism”.
  • The US pledged its “ironclad” support for Israel, with President Joe Biden saying that his country was “fully, fully, fully supportive of Israel”. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Washington would “stand by the people of Israel at this critical moment”.
  • The Pentagon also said US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant had discussed “the severe consequences for Iran” should it launch a “direct military attack” on Israel. It did not say what those consequences would be.
  • German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said the country had warned Iran against “dangerous escalation”, which she said was “driving the region further to the brink of the abyss”.
  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned “the broadening of the Middle East conflict with escalation after escalation”. In a post on X, he wrote: “This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire.”

What comes next?

  • Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said Israel is “fully prepared to defend and retaliate” against the Iranian attack, stressing that it would be in a “timely manner”.
  • Sullivan, the White House adviser, told reporters that the Biden administration “made clear that there will be consequences — severe consequences — for this attack” by Iran, and the US “will work with Israel to make that the case”.
  • Iran has warned Israel against responding to its attack, threatening to launch further missiles at the country if it retaliates.
  • Raed Jarrar, advocacy director at the US-based think tank DAWN, told Al Jazeera that the Middle East was now in “a full-scale regional war” that will not end without a change in American policy. “This will not stop without the United States putting its foot down and saying, ‘We will not send more weapons to Israel. We will not fund and aid Israeli crimes,’” he said.
  • Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, said “there is no question” that Israel will respond. “You’re going to get into the type of retaliatory action, back and forth, that spawns a greater war,” he told Al Jazeera.
  • Rahman added that Israel “has been trying to invite this war” through its actions over the past several months. “Israel is capable of massive destruction, as we’re seeing in Lebanon. It’s capable of huge intelligence feats and waging really destruction warfare. Iran, I think, has tried to avoid that, but it’s on the path to some type of war with Israel.”

Match Play format good for young players

Match Play format good for young players

The future of Philippine golf will be put on display this week at The Country Club (TCC) in the ICTSI Junior PGT National Match Play Finals starting on Wednesday, and two renowned Filipino coaches believe that a tournament like this will serve the young players well in the future.

“Playing match against an opponent is very different from stroke play,” Norman Sto. Domingo, whose foremost protege is US Girls and US Women’s Amateur champion Rianne Malixi, told the Inquirer over the phone. “Those kids will learn how to strategize, which would be an integral part of their careers moving forward.”

A total of eight champions in four age brackets will be known by Friday as 62 participants filtered through five months of play in all of the three Philippine islands play 18 holes of stroke for position on Wednesday before battling KO style starting on Thursday.

Developing character

And Bong Lopez, whose products include LPGA winner Jennifer Rosales and former PH Open champ Angelo Que, believes that tournaments like these are perfect for the young players.

“This is where they develop character,” Lopez said in a different interview. “There’s a golf saying that your greatest opponent is yourself and you play the course. In a match play, it’s one-on-one against somebody.

“You need to strategize and you need to hold your nerves. And in doing that, you develop character.” he said.

Another layer of the challenge is navigating the TCC course, which is one of the toughest layouts in the country.

Domingo said that another thing players can learn in match is gamesmanship, something that they would need in finishing off foes in stroke play in the closing holes.

“There are a lot of things those kids can learn in a straight-up match, like playing at a pace like your opponent, or how one can throw an opponent off his pace, etc.,” said Domingo.

Fatigue will also be a factor with the semifinals and finals to be played on Friday. INQ

US says helped Israel thwart Iranian attack, reasserts ‘ironclad’ support | Isra…

The United States has said it helped Israel thwart an Iranian ballistic missile attack, with a senior White House official telling reporters that the US military “coordinated closely” with its Israeli counterparts to shoot down the projectiles.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Tuesday that “US naval destroyers joined Israeli air defence units in firing interceptors to shoot down in-bound missiles”.

“In short, based on what we know at this point, this attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective,” Sullivan said during a news briefing at the White House.

“This was first and foremost the result of the professionalism of the [Israeli military]. But in no small part because of the skilled work of the US military and meticulous joint planning in anticipation of the attack.”

Asked what Washington’s view was on possible Israeli retaliation, Sullivan said discussions were continuing between top US and Israeli military and political leaders. “We want to have some deep consultations with the Israelis,” he said.

Sullivan added later: “We are proud of the actions that we’ve taken alongside Israel to protect and defend Israel. We have made clear that there will be consequences — severe consequences — for this attack, and we will work with Israel to make that the case.”

Analysts have been warning for months that the failure of US President Joe Biden’s administration to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to agree to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip would push the Middle East into a regional war.

“A regional war becomes inevitable when the United States continues to fund and aid Netanyahu and all of his war crimes, his genocide, his attacks on all of his neighbours,” said Raed Jarrar, advocacy director at Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), a think tank in Washington, DC.

“This will not stop without the United States putting its foot down and saying, ‘We will not send more weapons to Israel. We will not fund and aid Israeli crimes,’” Jarrar told Al Jazeera.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it fired missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening in retaliation for the killings of people in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the recent assassinations of Hamas, Hezbollah and IRGC leaders.

The firings came just hours after the Israeli army said it had launched “limited” ground incursions into southern Lebanon. Hezbollah denied that Israeli forces had entered Lebanese territory.

The Israeli military, which has been trading fire with Hezbollah across the Israel-Lebanon border for months, recently escalated its assault on the country. Israeli strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut and other areas have killed and injured thousands of people over the past weeks.

Amid the surge in attacks and regional tensions, the Biden administration has repeatedly said it favours diplomacy and wants to see a de-escalation.

But critics have noted that the US government continues to offer Israel unwavering military and diplomatic support.

Washington provides Israel with at least $3.8bn in military aid annually, and Biden has greenlit $14bn in additional assistance to the US ally since the Gaza war began in October of last year.

Earlier on Tuesday, the White House said that Biden had “directed the US military to aid Israel’s defense against Iranian attacks and shoot down missiles that are targeting Israel”.

The Pentagon also said in a statement that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant had discussed “the severe consequences for Iran in the event Iran chooses to launch a direct military attack against Israel”.

The statement did not elaborate on what those consequences would be.

A spokesman for the US State Department said on Tuesday afternoon that the Biden administration’s support for Israel’s security remains “ironclad”.

“We will continue to stand with the people of Israel at this critical moment,” Matthew Miller told reporters.

But according to Jarrar, the analyst at DAWN, the Biden administration’s “blank cheque” policy to Israel is what led to the current escalation.

“The Biden administration is dysfunctional and there is no one behind the wheel. There is no leadership whatsoever,” he said.

“This administration is completely absent. They give Israel 100 percent of what they want, from weapons and money, and they can exercise 0 percent pressure on Israel. Netanyahu gets all that he wants, but he doesn’t have to pay a price for anything.

“What we’ve seen today is a result of this failed US leadership in the Middle East and North Africa. The region has officially entered a full-scale regional war.”

Ag business student receives CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement

Anthony Agueda recalls the Christmas mornings of his childhood — spent working on his family’s dairy farm with his siblings, cousins, uncles, father and grandfather. “Cows, and agriculture, in general, require around-the-clock care,” Agueda said. “It isn’t a job, it’s a way of life.”

Located in Stanislaus County, Alberto Dairy has been in Agueda’s family for three generations.

Agueda said, “My grandfather immigrated here at 19 from the Azores islands in Portugal, with nothing but his suitcase. He worked three jobs in agriculture and went back after five years, to marry my grandmother. They moved back to America and started the dairy in 1981.”

Agueda and his family have maintained a close relationship as they’ve worked together to run the family farm. It was Agueda’s grandfather who taught him how to properly feed cows and his father who taught him about cow care.

When Agueda was notified he had been selected as one of the recipients of this year’s CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement, his grandparents were the first people he shared the news with.

Established in 1984, the CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement is the California State University’s highest recognition for students, awarding superior academic performance, personal accomplishments and community service.

Agueda will be recognized by the California State University system as one of 23 students (one from each campus) to receive this award, at a formal ceremony at the CSU Chancellor’s office in Long Beach at about 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 24

Agueda is completing his final year of undergraduate studies at Fresno State, majoring in agricultural business.

While a student, Agueda has been active in the agricultural community, serving with Fresno State’s Agricultural Business Club and Dairy Science Club and California Dairy Leaders Program, as well as volunteering with Stanislaus County Farm Bureau and California Milk Advisory Board.

Through his volunteer work, Agueda has hosted virtual dairy farm tours for students nationwide and coordinated milk drives during Hunger Action Month for five years, personally delivering thousands of gallons of milk to local food banks to support nutritional needs of Valley children.

“I’m really proud to represent Fresno State and the agricultural community with this award,” Agueda said. “It feels important because we come from such an agriculturally sensitive region.”

“I am honored to live out [my grandparents’] dream, and prove that the huge risk they took has grown into incredible things.”

After graduating, Agueda plans to oversee business operations at Alberto Dairy.

He said, “Farmers across the state are making great strides in sustainable farming techniques and talking about how we can implement that and reduce pollution. My goal is to continue to make the dairy a net-zero operation, and we’re not far from obtaining that, actually.”

In the meantime, Agueda will be coordinating a milk drive with the Fresno State Dairy Science Club throughout October. Through the milk drive, Fresno State will compete with various collegiate agricultural programs in the Intercollegiate Give-A-Gallon Challenge, to see who can gather and distribute the most milk to their community.

On Oct. 15, milk donations can be dropped off at the Gibson Farm Market between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Diamondbacks owner threw Jordan Montgomery under the bus, but blamed himself for…

Jordan Montgomery was one of the best MLB free agents on the market last winter. The veteran starting pitcher was excellent after a mid-season trade to the Texas Rangers, posting a 2.78 ERA in his 11 starts with the club on the way to a World Series championship. The team Texas beat to win the World Series was the Arizona Diamondbacks. As Montgomery lingered on the market until Spring Training, Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick saw an opportunity to improve the team’s rotation and pushed for the front office to sign him.

The 2024 MLB Playoffs are now set, and the Diamondbacks were left on the outside looking in. The team was eliminated from the postseason during Monday’s electric double-header between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. Arizona one team to sweep the double-header to make the postseason, but instead the teams split, leaving the D-Backs out the playoffs.

As the Diamondbacks were reckoning with missing the playoffs a year after playing in the World Series, Kendrick went on local radio in Arizona and did something you rarely see from a pro sports owner: he blamed himself for signing Montgomery.

Here’s the full transcription:

“If anyone wants to blame anyone for Jordan Montgomery being a Diamondback, you’re talking to the guy that should be blamed,” Kendrick told Arizona Sports. “Because I brought it to [the front office’s] attention. I pushed for it. They agreed to it — it wasn’t in our game plan. You know when he was signed — right at the end of spring training. And looking back, in hindsight, a horrible decision to invest that money in a guy who performed as poorly as he did. It’s our biggest mistake this season from a talent standpoint. And I’m the perpetrator of that.”

Montgomery had by far the worst season of his career with Arizona. He finished posted a 6.23 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 21 starts, giving up 149 hits in 117 innings. Yikes.

It feels like player performance has more peaks and valleys in baseball than any other sport. Montgomery had been a reliable starting pitcher throughout his career, but it all fell apart this season. Arizona gave him a two-year, $47 million deal with a player option for 2025. That option stands at $22.5 million for next year, and he’s certain to pick it up.

Could Montgomery bounce back next year? Sure. Baseball is weird like that. It’s just so rare you hear an owner throw a player under the bus like this while at the same time blaming himself for the signing.
